ACTIVE INGREDIENTS AND SKIN REACTIONS

What you need to know

It’s not unusual for your skin to react when you start using new products or after a skincare treatment. However, a reaction doesn’t always mean something has gone wrong. In fact, it can often be a sign that your skin is being activated, with the products working to improve your skin’s health.

At MARIA ÅKERBERG, all our products are made with 100% natural and powerful ingredients, that both nourish and stimulate your skin. As a result, not all of our products are considered "gentle". Some are designed to be more active and may deliver noticeable results by working deeper within the skin.

When your skin is activated, you may experience temporary reactions such as redness, warmth or a slight tingling sensation. This is often a sign that blood circulation is increasing and your skin is absorbing the nourishment. It’s a natural part of the process when the skin is being stimulated by active ingredients.

When your skin may be extra sensitive

Your skin is your body’s second largest organ and it’s affected by both internal and external factors. During colder months or as the seasons change, your skin can become drier and irritated, making it more sensitive – even to products you’ve used for a long time.

Pollen and allergens can also have an impact on your skin’s reactivity. When your immune system is under stress – such as during an allergic response – your body focuses its energy on handling these external factors. This can weaken your skin’s barrier, making it more prone to reactions such as redness or irritation.

Additionally, stress, food intolerances and hormonal fluctuations can all disrupt your skin’s balance and make it more likely to react to active ingredients.

What you need to keep in mind

Just like with food, some people may be sensitive or allergic to certain natural ingredients. If you know you have sensitive or reactive skin, it’s always a good idea to patch test a new product on the inside of your elbow before applying it to your face or body.

When to take a skin reaction seriously

While activated skin reactions are often mild and temporary, there are times when it’s important to be cautious. If you notice any of the following, it’s essential to stop using the product and consult a skincare professional or healthcare provider:

• Persistent or severe redness or swelling that doesn’t ease within a few hours.

• A burning or stinging sensation that lasts or gets worse

• Itching, rash or blisters

• Flaking combined with irritation or discomfort

If you suspect an allergic reaction, wash off the product immediately with lukewarm water and avoid using it until the cause has been determined. We recommend reaching out to your skincare professional for advice on how to care for your skin after such a reaction.

Skin Therapist’s Tip

If your skin reacts temporarily to a product or treatment, you can soothe and hydrate it with a combination of Face Lotion Moist and Aloe Vera Barbadensis. This gentle yet effective combination will help calm redness and restore balance to your skin.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact one of our skincare professionals or speak with an authorised reseller. We’re here to guide you and help you choose the best products for your skin’s unique needs.
