HOW TO CARE FOR DRY SKIN

Characteristics, causes and treatment

Dealing with dry skin can be frustrating, especially when it feels tight and itchy. It’s a common issue, particularly during the winter months or when the seasons change. Here are some tips to help keep your skin soft and hydrated throughout the year.

Dry vs. dehydrated skin: how to tell the difference

It’s important to differentiate between a dry skin type and temporarily dehydrated skin to provide the right care.

Dry Skin is genetically lower in sebum production, resulting in a lack of both moisture and oil. It can feel rough and dull due to the absence of lubricating sebum. Dry skin rarely experiences breakouts and pores tend to be quite small. This skin type benefits from regular use of rich, hydrating products to maintain its suppleness.

Temporary dehydration can affect anyone, regardless of skin type, and is usually caused by external factors that compromise the skin barrier. Even oily or combination skin can become temporarily dry and require additional moisture. Signs of dehydration include fine lines and a tight sensation, indicating a need for extra hydration.

Why skin becomes dry

Several factors can contribute to dry skin: Cold weather, wind and low humidity are common culprits, as are hot indoor environments. Prolonged hot showers and harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils. Using the wrong products or excessive exfoliation can exacerbate dryness. Additionally, as we age, our skin naturally becomes drier.

The right face care for dry skin

Incorporate a moisture serum into your skincare routine. Nourishing Oils may also be beneficial to strengthen the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss. Occasionally, an exfoliating product might be needed to remove dry, flaky skin and allow better penetration of moisture and nutrients. Use a gentle, cream-based cleanserand always apply sunscreenas sun exposure can also dry out the skin.

Apply Body Lotion immediately after a shower or bath to lock in moisture. Try our Shower & Bath Oil which is applied to damp skin for added hydration. To Remove dryness, we recommend our Cream Scrub.
